The Southwest Saskatchewan Immigration Partnership (SSIP), in partnership with the Southwest Multicultural Association (SWMA) and community partners, invites organizations, municipalities, Indigenous communities, cultural groups, educational institutions, and other community stakeholders to participate in the Cultural Mosaic Initiative. The initiative features internationally acclaimed performers Wilbur Sargunaraj and Mathew Olabisi, bringing music, rhythm, storytelling, humour, and cultural expression together in an engaging experience designed to bring people from different backgrounds together.
The Cultural Mosaic Initiative is more than a cultural entertainment event. It is a partnership-based community capacity-building activity designed to demonstrate how communities can create meaningful opportunities for people and organizations from different cultural and lived experiences to connect, participate, learn, and build relationships.
Southwest Saskatchewan Immigration Partnership (SSIP) and the Southwest Multicultural Association (SWMA) jointly own the initiative.
Through this initiative, community organizations, cultural groups, Indigenous partners, municipalities, educational institutions, and other stakeholders are brought together around a shared experience of culture, learning, connection, inclusion, and belonging.
A key component of the Cultural Mosaic Initiative is its educative nature. The program uses music, performance, storytelling, humour, and cultural expression as engaging tools for exploring cultural intelligence, diversity, cross-cultural understanding, and inclusion.
For this reason, schools, colleges, and other post-secondary institutions are encouraged to bring students and pupils to the event for educational purposes. Educators can use the experience as an opportunity to expose learners to different cultural perspectives and encourage discussion about diversity, identity, belonging, cultural differences, and respectful relationships between communities.
The initiative therefore provides an opportunity for learners to experience cultural education in an interactive and engaging environment while connecting with the broader community.
Connecting the Initiative to Welcoming Week
The Cultural Mosaic Initiative is shaped by the spirit of Welcoming Week— the idea that welcoming communities are built through meaningful relationships, participation, inclusion, and opportunities for people to connect with one another.
The timing of the initiative is also intentional. The events will take place on September 28, 2026, with the Maple Creek event at noon, and the Swift Current event in the evening, during Culture Days and in the lead -up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
This timing provides an opportunity to approach the celebration of diversity alongside a commitment to learning, relationship-building, and respectful engagement with Indigenous peoples and communities.
SSIP is particularly interested in creating opportunities for intentional engagement among Indigenous partners, cultural communities, municipalities, and broader community organizations. The initiative creates space for participants to come together, learn from one another, and explore how relationships across cultures and histories can contribute to more welcoming and inclusive communities.
